Opinion: Our society often punishes individuals struggling with addiction

The recent settlement announced between the state of Ohio and consulting business McKinsey & Co. for the firm's role in creating and fueling the opioid epidemic is a perfect example of how we unfairly punish Ohioans dealing with substance-use disorder while allowing the engineers of this crisis to escape with just a slap on the wrist.

More than 200,000 lives have been lost to the opioid epidemic between 1999-2018. According to Ohio Attorney General Yost, the death rate in Ohio last year from opioid overdose was the highest rate in 10 years. Nearly 67% of Ohio counties have reported an increase of opioid deaths.
