Teaching Opioid Abuse Prevention


The following items are recommendations from the Governor's Cabinet Opiate Action Team of information that should be included to meet the health instruction requirement focused on “Prescription opioid abuse prevention, with an emphasis on the prescription drug epidemic and the connection between prescription opioid abuse and addiction to other drugs, such as heroin.”

Based upon national data provided by the National Institute of Drug Addiction, (NIDA) and the most recent Center for Disease Control, (CDC) regarding prescription opioid abuse and heroin abuse, prevention education is vital to all students in primary and secondary schools. The grade band recommendations are K-2, 3-5, 6, 7-8, 9, 10-11, 12 and curriculum provided should be developed and subsequently modified to match industry standards.
